“Sent,” I told Zoey, who was surveying the room cautiously with her weapon still at the ready.

“Good.” She nodded curtly. “Let’s hope they move fast.”

The three of us ran out of the temple. The high position we had on the temple steps gave us a clear view of the wide streets and the gates ahead.

At that moment, the gates of New Babylon exploded inwards, and an army of were-gators charged through. Their scales glistened under the eerie light of the city. Their snarls and roars filled the air, creating a symphony of chaos that sent shivers down my spine.

“Wow, those things really know how to make an entrance,” I muttered and gripped my sword tighter. Zoey chuckled, though her grip on her scythe remained white-knuckled.

As the were-gators tore through New Babylon, their ferocity matched only by their determination to avenge their fallen comrades, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of uncertainty. We didn’t know which other gods might be lurking in temples of their own and my tour of the city—courtesy of Nebuchadnezzar—was incomplete.

I glanced over at Zoey, who seemed to sense my unease. She met my gaze, her eyes filled with a fire that burned away any lingering doubts. In that moment, we shared an unspoken understanding. We would see this through to the end, together.

The Van Helsings entered the city firing at soldiers, Reginald with his rifle and Alexander with his crossbow. They had their part of the battle handled.

“Ready?” Zoey had to raise her voice to be heard over the din of clashing weapons and snarling creatures.

“Always,” I replied. “Let’s look for Nebuchadnezzar and those other wily gods and end this once and for all.”
